Our Vision
The vision of the Schaeffer Center is that students at Hampden-Sydney College would become thoughtful Christian leaders. So, what does that look like?
We want students to wrestle honestly with hard questions — about faith, meaning, vocation, and the world — rather than settle for easy answers or inherited assumptions. This means cultivating real intellectual curiosity: reading widely, engaging opposing views charitably, and reasoning with rigor and humility. For young men in a culture that prizes quick certainty over reflection, this means learning to hold conviction and inquiry together, unafraid of hard questions because the truth can bear genuine scrutiny.

At the center of our work is the conviction that the Christian faith is not merely private belief but a comprehensive way of understanding reality — one that speaks to vocation, relationships, suffering, and purpose. We want students to encounter a faith that is intellectually credible and personally transformative, rooted in historic Christian teaching and biblical revelation. For men navigating questions of identity, this means grounding their sense of self and calling in something more durable than achievement, growing in character as much as belief.
Leadership from a Christian perspective is a vocation — a calling — and is fundamentally about service — using one's gifts and influence for the good of others rather than self-advancement. We want to form men who lead with courage and conviction, yet also with humility and a willingness to be shaped by a wisdom greater than their own. In keeping with Hampden-Sydney's mission to form "good men and good citizens," this vision resists both passivity and domineering ambition, equipping men to follow Christ’s example as they lead in their communities, churches, and workplaces.

The Schaeffer Center treats these three not as separate goals but one integrated vision: a mind sharpened by honest inquiry, a heart shaped by Christ, a life ordered toward serving others. We believe genuine Christian formation cannot separate what someone thinks from what he believes or how he lives — together they shape a coherent, faithful life.
“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
